Local native plant enthusiasts are happy to share their knowledge of growing wildflowers and grasses. This group can help you start naturalizing your yard to attract butterflies and birds and to make it more environmentally friendly. Field trips and guest speakers may be scheduled throughout the year. Meetings are normally held the 1st Saturday of the month at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve at 10AM.

Saturday, February 2

Dolly Foster, WO Member & LCMG, Winter Sowing Workshop

Do you need plants for your garden or for a plant sale? Need to sow seeds? Need a way to sow seeds that doesn't turn your dining room/ living room/ laundry room into a messy conglomeration of soil, lights and water stains? Need a way to start seeds without you kitty eating your sprouts or using the flat as a litter box? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Winter Sowing is the method for you! We will be having a hands-on workshop on Winter Sowing at the Feb 2 meeting. What will be provided? tools/ duct tape/ soil/ plant markers/seeds. — What you need to bring to participate: One or two 1 gallon water or milk jugs (rinse with hot water and soap)/ seeds if you have them. A utility knife and heavy scissors are helpful. Please note: This workshop will be about 2 hours long - but will be well worth the extra time!

Drew Hart, US Forest & Daiva Gylys, SCA, NWI Community Native Tree Planting Program  

The Student Conservation Association has worked in partnership with CommuniTree to plant and maintain native trees in the northwest Indiana communities of Hammond, East Chicago, Whiting, and Gary for two years. This work is primarily supported through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Chi Cal Rivers Fund. Since the spring of 2017, the SCA has hired young people to plant over 2,000 native trees on public land in these communities. They have successfully engaged over 1,500 volunteers and have supported over 35 public volunteer workdays. Come learn about the strategies and partnerships that help this program be successful. Also, find out ways to get involved in 2019!

Plant Sale Preparation, Plant ‘Fashion Show’

Wild Ones member, Mickey Taylor & Company will present us with a sneak peak of new plants that will be available at our May 4, 2019 Native Plant Sale. We will also be fine tuning details for the plant sale, and the days leading up to the sale. All volunteers should plan on attending this meeting.

19th Annual Native Plant Sale
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Over 100 species of flowers, grasses, sedges and shrubs; including prairie, wetland, shade and woodland. For a complete list of plants, visit Wild Ones website. Arrive early for best selection. Be sure to also visit our White Elephant Sale (proceeds help feed the birds at Gibson Woods).
